The Oldest Botanic Garden in the UK.
Not only is it the oldest in the UK it is one of the oldest in the World. The garden is situated on the banks of the river Cherwell in Oxford with boats floating by regularly. The garden is a ten minute walk away from the centre of the city (fifteen/twenty from the train station) and you are rewarded with the quiet, slow paced environment of the gardens.
If you are starting off a tour of glasshouses or botanical gardens, I suggest starting here and begin in a chronological way. At least it gives you foundations of where others have originated from. One thing I liked about Oxford, is the labelling of each and every plant. Sometimes you visit places and you want to look into particular plants or after photographing one i’d like to know what it was, but there has been no label. And I don’t know hardly enough about plants to be able to know each variety. So it was so helpful at Oxford to have the plants labelled. It’s a small and meticulous detail but one that is much appreciated.
